Let’s talk about what cows do versus what buffalo do when a storm comes rolling over the mountains.
Cows sense the storm coming & start to run away from it. The only problem is cows aren’t very fast. So the storm catches up with them fast & without knowing any better the cows continue to TRY to outrun the storm. But instead of outrunning the storm they actually run right along with the storm. Maximizing the amount of pain & time & frustration they experience!
What buffalo do on the other hand is very different. They wait for the storm to cross right over the crest of the peak of the mountaintop & as the storm rolls over the ridge the buffalo turn & charge directly into the storm. By running at the storm they run straight through it. Minimizing the amount of pain, time & frustration they experience from that storm.
Notice how it’s the exact same storm?
It’s such a great metaphor for all of us because all of us have some "storm" or struggle. The only choice we get to have is how we respond to the storms & more specifically, when we respond to those storms.
Being the buffalo & allowing our pain in is ridiculously hard. But when we try to run from it, ignore it, numb it, or justify it it’s also ridiculously hard. I believe we don't need to charge the storm, but turn & face it. Take steps in that direction & soon as you build tolerance, you can charge it. When we’re ready to meet the hurt parts of ourselves, our life & our relationships begin to change.
